One of the best things about living and working in beautiful Santa Rosa is its access to nature. Northern California is world-famous for its rugged natural beauty, and there are literally dozens of hiking trails, parks, wetlands, and more within easy striking distance.

Maybe it’s just us, but we’re pretty sure there’s one thing that’s sure to complement the natural beauty of the Santa Rosa Trails. Wondering what it is? We’ll give you a little hint….

This massive park is one of the hidden treasures of Santa Rosa. Located on the eastern edge of town, Trione-Annadel offers miles of trails, not just for hiking but for mountain biking and horseback riding, too. The various hikes span the range of difficulty, and they offer varying views of forest, marsh, Lake Ilsanjo and more. We’re especially taken with the wildflowers that bloom in spring through early summer.

Visit this sprawling, 1,100-acre park at the right time of year and you’d swear you’re in Ireland! You’ll be greeted by gently rolling hills, oak woodlands and a pair of creeks that provide excellent habitat for various wildlife. If you climb the Eastern Trail all the way up to the summit, you’ll be rewarded with an awe-inspiring view of Santa Rosa. Trails for mountain biking and horseback riding wind through the flatter portions of the park, making for reasonably easy hiking. There’s even an 18-hole disc golf course! But don’t forget to bring water, as there are no facilities here other than a Porta Potty….

This beautiful 72-acre lake—actually a reservoir, technically—might rank as Santa Rosa’s most popular outdoor attractions. In addition to the watersports (a summer swimming lagoon, kayak and paddleboard rentals and more), there are nearly ten miles of hiking trails for you to explore. Newbies will love the paved loop around the lake, while more experienced hikers can make use of trails leading to Trione-Annadel State Park and Howarth Park, a park maintained by the city of Santa Rosa.

Considered by many the “jewel” of Santa Rosa, beloved Howarth Park has a little something for everyone. Hikers and cyclists love its miles and miles of trails; many of them link up to County-maintained paths, creating seemingly never-ending hiking opportunities. We love the “Old Fisherman’s Trail” skirting the edge of Lake Ralphine; more ambitious hikers can try the Bay Area Ridge Trail which will take you all the way to nearby Spring Lake. When you’re tired out from all the exertion you can take yourself down to the Animal Barn, an interactive barnyard exhibit open during the summer months. And the snack bar offers all the kinds of treats you’d expect like nachos, ice cream, and popcorn. Of course, if you need another kind of edible, we’d love to help!
